This morning I noticed that my 88 325 was making an odd sound between 2000 and 2400 rpms. The closest thing I could think of that it sounded like was a noisy clutch fan coming on, but that's not it. I opened the hood and I can't quite localize the sound. It's not coming from the front so I don't think it's an accessory, I think it's coming from the top of the engine. With the hood open and revving the engine it sounds almost like a loose bearing or something, a roaring/scraping sound. Like I said, it starts at about 2000 and shuts off like a switch at around 2400-2500. Any ideas on what this might be?

Figured it out: The water pump is ready to go. The vibration is from the fan vibrating because of the slack in the pump's bearing. Fortunately I had already planned on getting the timing belt/tensioner done this week and was pretty sure I was going to do the pump while it was apart anyway. This just removed any doubt I had about doing the pump...
