    SUB-frame squeaks?

how do you know when it's time to replace the sub-frame mounts. what type of sounds should I hear?

I currently hear squeaks when I take-off from a stop not excessively fast.

Essentially any E30 needs new subframe, trailing arm, and diff/trans/motor mounts by now. The exception would a perfect example that has super low mileage (less than 60k) and that has spent the last 20 years in a garage in SoCal.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

How about squeaks only when you back up uphill?

Probably not subframe bushings. That will cause loud thudding like a bad diff mount, when you dump the the clutch especially. And E30 subframe bushings almost never go bad (unlike e28, e24). I've done one set and the car had around 400k on it. I have well over 300k on mine and as of a month ago, they're good.
