What does "lockup" percentage mean w/ differential

I'm seeing a lot more about differentials with 40%, 60%, etc... lockup, but I'm not really sure what this means.

I know how limited slip works, but only a little bit. Can someone explain how a diff actually works, and what the lockup percentage means?

    Thanks.

Car wheels spin at different speeds, especially when they're turning. So how does the differential help make them turn with such ease?

      Wow, that's a great link.

      That explained everything.
