    Terrible MPGs

Okay here's the scoop. Car has recieved all regular maintenance within the last year. Its been running great up until this past weekend. I usually got about 300 miles per tank which is alright but nothing extraordinary (22 mpg).

I seafoamed the car on Friday but only used 1/3 of the entire bottle, had a full tank of gas. I drove a bit around my hometown (50 miles) and then proceeded to return to work in Asheville (120 miles).

Now I only have about 170 miles on my trip odometer and I'm reading about 1/8th of a tank or less left. I watched it the whole trip slowly dropping.

I don't know what happened, but I've seafoamed my car before and got great results. This time the car runs the same, but has worse MPG.

The car recently had a 71 deg C thermostat installed (because it was new and laying around... stupid me) and the temp gauge always reads about 1/8th from cold. Is it possible that the car is running so cold that its just running really rich and killing all of my gas?

    I need some help.

that is possable, the temp gauge should sit about 1/4-1/3 in this weather

Swap that stat out for the 80 deg.

I'm getting worse MPG lately, too. I recently got my car up and running after letting it sit for a good 6 months, all new ignition/fuel/intake filters and regular maintenance pieces. After finishing the work I was averaging 25.8 MPG on the highway at 70-72.5 MPH on my 70 mile trip each way to Hoboken and back. Now that it's colder out, I've been averaging 20-22 MPG. My temp gauge still reads the same, I run the 80 deg stat. I thought engines produced more power when it got cold out. Does anybody have an explanation for this?

      Thread jack!

nope, engines run better when they are hot
they have more power with cooler AIR, but not the engine itself

I say the bad mpg may also have to do with crappy gas? Maybe...

I just ordered an 80 degree thermostat. It may not fix the current mpg problem, but I needed to be running warmer anyway. I'll also be checking my spark plugs, but they're only about 6 months old anyway.

It could be crappy gas as well. I'll be filling up soon so we will see!
