steering column rattles on early model

my 88 started rattling in the front. thought it was a strut at first but when i jacked up the front end and started checking everything out, i wiggled the front drivers wheel, saw and heard the steering column u-joint had some play and was rattling. is this common? i know on late models with airbags its a whole nother issue and has the splines etc which will rattle. but can i just go to the junkyard and get a good ujoint and replace?

EDIT could it be #12 in this? the flex disc looking thing?

Try seeing if that large nut on the column can be tightened. Mine was loose and causing a sound over bumps.
