wont start and i cant tell why not

i picked up an 86 325e that i was told has a bad fuel pump, i put a working fuel pump in it and it still wouldnt start. i sprayed starting fluid in it and got it to fire up but it died soon as it burnt the starting fluid off. i havent checked to see if fuel is getting to the motor but if it is would the mass air flow, oxygen sensor, or the crank postion sensor be my problem

Sound like Simple lack of fuel. Check for fuel at rail. If nothing, check the fuel pump relay, then BOTH pumps. And DEFINITELY get a new fuel filter.

Inline pump is in front of the driver's rear wheel.

Inline is the main pump. The in-tank is just a transfer pump to pull gas out of the tank to make the job easier for the inline pump.

There is no bypass. Why would they even put another pump in if that would work. Test your main pump to see if it is coming on. if not check the fuel pump relay. then get back to us.

well shit still didnt work so i went to pull a part and bought a main pump with a warranty for 20 bucks and waa laa after a few cranks it started up and idled around 1200 and about 5 mins later went down to about 700 rpms and runs fine. plus wat is the point in 2 pumps y didnt they just make one pump in the tank that would send fuel all the way to the motor?

they have one pump feeding another its just the way they did it up until 88. they changed to the motronic 1.1 system and they did away with the second pump also yours has a seperate cold start valve that they did away with.

but im having the same problem but i have an 89 325i but i replaced the injectors and ever since the fuel pump will not energize does anyone know what it may be i replaced both relays and the fuse and still nothing. i jumpered the fuel pump relay 30 and 87 and the fuel pump energized and i checked all voltages at those now im going to check the computer but i am very confused right now. any suggestions?

Blue e30- it could be a bad dme. so switch it out with a known good one to test it. there is also a reference sensor which can cause these symptoms. I had a similar occurrence with my 89. pump turned on when i jumped it, relay was good but no go. turned out to be a stupid reference sensor.

The sensors that hook up to the bellhousing, they read the crank/flywheel position.
