I am having the same problems with my car too. It happens when the car had been driven for a long time or after a hard run. No performance issues, no problems, just a VERY annoying noise. From what I hear it is a pilot bearing. How expensive is it to change? I guess sealed one is in order. Any ideas?

I guess it could be the pilot bearing but it's likely the input bearing in the transmission. Pilot bearing is fairly easy, input bearing is not.

Easy or not, I assume it will have to be changed at some point, right? So the question still stands- how much $$$ does it usually take to get it done?
By the way - ho do you load pictures on this site?

Pilot bearing can be changed with a clutch job, it's basically standard procedure. Input bearing basically requires a reman transmission, it's not generally DIY material.

            DONT' WORRY ABOUT IT.
It is a normal BMW getrag tranny sound. I have replaced every bearing and their mothers and it still makes the sound. if you don't like it, DON"T RUN SYNTHIC FLUID.
if your running redline or something like it, get used to it. it will always make this noise.

and your tranny is not going, and it is not common for our trannys to go, stop worrying.
