It could be the level sensor, or it might be a problem with the wiring. Fill the car up and with the light on, disconnect the level sensor at the tank. If the light immediately goes off the sensor is the probable cause. If there's no change, the wiring is the cause. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

just curious, somewhat related to this thread, but when my needle hits empty, I fill up and Im only getting about 12.5 gallons.
Im wondering as well if my fuel level sender took a crap, because the gas light used to come on when I was hitting empty, then I fixed the cluster and now I can drive the car past the empty mark and the light has still yet to come on.Comment

did you check the nut on the back of the gauge cluster? one of mine was missing, causing an erratic gauge, and the solder connection on the board was deformed. I re-flowed the connection with a soldering iron, and my gauge operation has been flawless since..Comment

Which one would be the level sensor. On the drivers side or passenger side. I am having this same problem with my car.Comment

For late model cars the gauge sender is under the driver side cover but the light sender is under the passenger side cover.Comment
