    E39 540i Vanos rattle problem

I know i know its not an e30 but maybe somebody can help me out

so i was tryin to help out a buddy who just bought a '99 540i it had a coolant leak at the back of the engine which took several attempts to fix. after we got the stupid hoses to seal properly again and go to put the top cover back on the engine i notice two vacuum lines that connect to the plastic air intake tube at the front of the engine are disconnected so i reconnect them. then when he starts it up again a check engine light comes on (i don't have a code reader so i don't know what the code was)

so the old e30 mechanic (me) says "let's unhook the battery it works on e30's" i had a sneaking suspicion it wouldn't do anything but i tried it anyways.

so i hook the battery up again and the engine starts very rough, takes twice as much cranking to get going and worst of all the vanos is making shit loads of noise why the hell would unhooking the battery make the vanos stop working? and i mean it doesnt just rattle on start up it does it at idle all the way to part throttle too

if anyone on here has any idea i would appreciate the advice

    thanx
