If they have not been swapped, there is a possibility of breaking off.

The head will likely lodge under the cam and poke a hole in the head...bad juju.

any tips for avoiding that horrible scenario?

Take your oil cap off and shine a light in there, you should be able to see a few of the head bolts to verify which type they are.
