    OT: E39 540i 6 speed issue

My brothers 540 has an odd issue, if you coast in 5th gear for about 10 seconds the transmission will shift itself back into almost neutral (gears disengage but its not quite neutral) has anyone else heard of this happening in e39s? im not sure if anyone on here will be able to help but it couldnt hurt to ask.

I've not heard of that; more often these manuals have trouble getting into gears in the first place. That problem is related to the shift detents, and there's a detent update kit for the problem. I had trouble getting mine into third, especially when the trans was cold (SoCal fwiw). I tried different fluids, but nothing would cure it. I believe the trans had to come out for the repair, so the usual while-you're-in-there stuff applies.

I'd try the e39 board at bimmerforums for some more opinions.

worn detents will cause it to pop out of gear too. could be the same issue.

Check the motor and transmission mounts. The engine and transmission could be shifting under reverse torque.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
