clutch pedal spring. how is it held in.

how is that rod held into the body, the one that goes throught the middle of the spring?

It is held into a notch into the pedal bracket. Look at the number 9 on the right side of the clutch pedal pivot, now go to the right about a quarter inch. That notch is where it is "attached". It's not really attached, but rather placed. It will not slide out under normal use, but it can fall out if you don't set it correctly from the beginning.

For a non-airbag car, it rests on a metal tab that is welded onto the pedal box.

Without the spring, a properly bled clutch will not return all the way to the top. It will be a few inches low and will make the clutch fully disengage when the pedal reaches near the end of the travel.
