new to me eta hesitation when warm....

I've been registered here a while but never post, just troll. Well, I bought my first e30 last tuesday. 86 w/ 220K-ish miles. It's in fabulous shape, I love it.

For 3 days now, the car has been stumbling when I give it throttle as the revs climb. As its warming up, it'll rev great all the way to redline. As the coolant gets warmer though, I lose rev range. It gradually lowers to almost 2500, where it just won't rev any further. Again, it gets worse as the car warms up.

    Here's what I have done/tried:
*checked all coolant sensor connections. There were a couple that were loose and one was detached altogether. I cleaned the contacts and attached everything, no change. One set of sensors on the radiator (the lower set on the left side) were both detached, so I just guessed as to which connection went where, but neither combination fixes the problem, so I assume that's ok.

*unplugged AFM when it's running, and it dies almost immediately. So that should be ok right?

*unplugged O2 sensor connection in engine bay and drove it when cold and warm, no change in the symptoms.

*checked every other connection I could find, no luck.

*when I bought the car the coolant was way low (none in the tank really). I know this is b/c of a leaky tank on the right side there's a drain plug or some type of bleed valve at about 2 o'clock as you go around the tank. Could it be air in the system near the coolant temp sensor maybe?

I'm lost here, but not totally without the drive to fix it myself instead of leaving my CC# with a shop. I don't really have access to voltmeters and wouldn't really know what normal ranges are for things like 02 sensors, so try and keep that in mind. Thanks for the help.

how does it stop revving? roughly with a sumble or does it act just like its hitting a revlimiter?

The coolant temp sensor was in right? So you know it didnt overheat or anything?
    Im now E30less.

I assume the coolant temp sensor works fine, as the needle will climb up to one notch below midway and stay there. Maybe thats part of the issue too, hadn't thought of that. But I've driven it for more than enough miles at a time to overheat if it were gonna do that, and it was a daily driver for the owner I bought it from.

The stumbling is like a rev limiter. It'll rev up to 4K, lets say, then just hang there as if fuel has been cut. It doesn't backfire. It bucks and sputters sometimes, but more often that's in 1st or 2nd gear. In the higher gears it just hits a wall and stops accelerating.

Check your fuel system. I would start with the filter. Sounds like it's clogged and not letting enough fuel get to the motor. Pretty cheap at the dealer (< $10), and an easy fix. It's infront of the driver side rear wheel.

        Keep it slideways!!

Also check the fuel pressure regulator

fpr looks new, previous owner told me somthing about the fuel sender possibly needing replacement. I'll fiddle with the fuel filter and see if it's ok or not. Would an old fuel filter act up as the car got warmer? That's the part that makes me think O2 sensor or coolant temp sensor, but what do I know!?
