1261 for Fuel Pump Relay or wiring

    Getting CEL 1261. 89 325ix

Fuel and main relays replaced about a year ago.

I swapped in new ones again yesterday and momentary stalling still occurring with 1261 being set.

    Symptoms Conditions:

CEL comes on and stalls a bit (does not completely stall out - feels like fuel starvation just like with bad FPR) when just starting up and cold at idle.

After it warms up, symptoms are gone for at idle, but fuel is cutting out momentary at speed. All speeds, but most pronounced when giving it more gas.

I think the relays are fine.

I've seen brief write-ups regarding the relay socket itself, the wiring/power from relay to pump, to the relay, or the DME/Computer itself.

I'd like to get input/advice from anyone who has had similar experience and found fault with something other than the relay. Such as the DME or wiring or sockets.

I believe that the majority of folks have just replaced the relays and are on their way. That doesn't appear to be working for me this time.

    TIA

I'm reasonably sure that fault is only related to the relay coil. As far as i know the DME can't tell anything about the power to the pump. Therefore the cause of 1261 will be; bad relay, poor connection in the relay socket, problem with power to the relay, or a fault in the DME itself. Figuring out which is the fun part.

You could ohm out the wiring from the DME to the relay coil (pin 3 I think) and ohm out the power lead to the coil (see http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm for wiring diagrams). If you don't find anything suspicious there, try another relay and/or a different DME.

Still wondering if everyone who has had CEL 1261 come up in their car changed relays and were good to go and no one has found DME or wiring issues?

I have this problem in my Spec E30, but I haven't yet found the cause. So far I haven't found a problem with the wiring in the engine harness, nor does it matter which DME I have in the car. And of course I've replaced the relay. The one thing I haven't yet checked is to see where power to the relay coil comes from.
