    Engine temp issue

    Last night, my wife and I had to drive the 325i about 110 miles round trip. Aboult halfway back, I noticed the temp gauge was getting a bit high. After a while, it went almost to the red. So we threw the heater on high, pulled off, and went to the nearest store.

    When I pulled the cap off the overflow tank, almost all the coolant drained down. I went in and bought a bottle of coolant and some water, mixed them up, and it was fine the rest of the way home, but once we got back into slower in-town traffic, it started to get a little high again, and is now usually hanging out near the 3/4 mark. The car doesn't have a coolant leak, at least I've never seen any in the driveway. Anyone have any ideas?

      Sounds like the thermostat shit the bed on you.

          That's what I was thinking. Would the thermostat going out just make the gauge read a high temp, or will it actually affect the engine temp?

              AFAIK it will affect the engine temp as well, due to the lower flow of coolant in the engine.

                  It ran almost into the red again today, and I took the cap off, let it all drain into the engine, and filled it up again. My brother-in-law thinks it may be an air pocket trapped somewhere in the lines, which seems likely. I'll monitor it for a few days and see what happens.

                      there's a bleed screw on top of the thermostat housing, bleed your cooling system of air. check also the aux fan if its working properly. this was what caused my overheating last time. relay under the dash burned out.
