    Spewing Expansion Tank!?

Trust me, I searched the site and found nothing.

I went to look at an '86 325es today and, among other problems, the expansion tank is fuxored. The car has the early-style expansion tank (from what I gather). The problem was that the hose coming off the top of the tank toward the fender was simply not connected to anything (???) and thus was causing a vacuum leak (lopey idle) and was spewing coolant on the frame and the ground. Is this the overflow hose? If so, Where the hell is it supposed to be connected to? Help will be appreciated!

If you're talking about the hose that comes out the top of the tank it's an overflow hose and doesn't need to be hooked to anything. If it was pushing coolant out I'd say it has a blown head gasket or something seriously wrong with the cooling system.

Yeah it was just spewing it onto the ground. And the thing was making some weird ass noises, so I can believe there's something majorly wrong. In that case, F*** that car. Haha. I'll keep looking. Thanks a lot.

Oh I forgot to mention... I had her pinch the overflow line closed and I started it up again, and there was no more vacuum issue. Is this further evidence of a blown headgasket?

It may have been the tube that goes back to the top of the radiator.

Nope that one was securely fastened. There were two tubes coming out the top of the tank - one that went forward and was connected to the radiator, and the other was freely hanging. The tube was cracked where it was connected to the tank and was spewing out that crack, but when we taped it it continued to spill down onto the frame and ground.

That is the overflow and no fluid should come out of it unless the cap is bad or the system is over pressurized. It sounds like fluid was venting from the overflow on a cold engine, which probably means a failed head gasket.

The cooling system has no connections to the intake and can't cause an intake leak.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
