    e30 tilt column

I am a short lil guy, i think right at 5.5 so with the seat dropped down, like i like it, the bus steering wheel they installed 20 years ago is not always fun to use.

Just wondering if anyone has ever cam up with a tilt mechanism.

    Move the seat up.

A tilt mech would be more trouble that it'd be worth. I don't know of one in existence.

        Sit on a phone book.

        j/k

To move the steering column down would require installing a new u-joint and then finding a way to mount it. There is too much stuff in the dash to just let it tilt down, and if you did move it down, you'd have a big hole in the dash.

I figured I could get some thin black rubber to fill in the section at the top, would look like a car that has tilt.

I may attempt to install a uv, had thought about that, will just have to come up with a suppport for the bearing, Hey I could use my old DS. lol

          Guess it will never happen.

How about putting some shims where it bolts in cab?

then there will still be the problem with the joints. I guess I will just have to grow a little.

                Somehow mount your seat higher?

                Sold it.

A smaller wheel might help, like a 350mm Momo or something. They sit a little closer to the dash than the standard wheel so they are lower as well. You also don't have to reach as high to reach the top of the wheel.

fwiw I'm 5'8 and have the seat at its lowest position and like where the wheel is. nice and high, get lots of leverage on it.

Lik eI said I like my seat dropped down, better clutch movement and my feet hit the pdeals just right, I may go for a smaller wheel, but then my arms wouls not reach, lol I am fucked up.

the e28 had a telescoping wheel, that would move in or out thus higher or lower, you could maybe adapt and E28 steering column to the e30 chassis.

distance wise it is perfect, I just want the center to sit about 1.5 inches closer to the floor.

My old boss has an '87 325 that he races. He took the column loose in the car and shimmed between the column and the dash mount using some nuts as spacers. he had 2 on each side. Didn't change the angle enough to worry about the joints, and dropped the wheel down about 3 inches at the horn button. He left the knee bolster out since it's a race car, but I would think you could create a new filler piece easily.

the knee bolster would just have to be cut, the space would be at the top, which would not bother me. trouble is I looked at the section that holds the column up and it seems to have large peg tyoe things, they are not threaded. he may have done it at a different section than what I have seen. I will look again.

                            Thanks

Sorry to bring up an old post, but I was looking at the knee bolster, and realize there's a slot for what looks like a tilt lever.

Anyone ever seen a factory tilt column? I remember reading it was super mega ultra rare, but all of the knee panels have the slots for the levers...
