Chipped car redlines at 5k instead of 7k!!!

    I Drive a 1991 318is coupe

Hey everyone, i need some help. I assumed my car was chipped because i realized i could rev my engine up to 7k. I had done this more than once, but recently I reved it up while entering a freeway onramp and noticed it redlines at around 5k. I dont rev it that high usually cause this is my DD and need to get to school and work. So its been awhile since its been reved to 7k.

Another thing is that my gas meter shows it at 1/2 full but its actually empty, it will show 4/4 when full but only goes 1/2 way and that means its empty. the red warning light will actually also come on when its at 1/2, so ive been going by this and its working so far but im wondering why it would do this?

    Things you should know!

    1. I just found out my glove box is broken and i havent since trying today been able to open it, so i wont find out whats on my ecu til tomorrow evening. (Hopefully) I also dont know how to check where the chip is and what not so please inform me cause is there an passenger airbag?.etc

    2. I recently changed my Cluster cause it seemed to be S#!t, for the reason that my revs werent flowing up and down smoothly it was choppy and inaccurate, my gas meter worked ever so often, and my temp was all overthe place, the MPH was also choppy like the revs, I TOLD YOU IT WAS S#!t. Did I mention it stopped counting milage!!!

So please let me know what you guys think, I dont need to hear "HEY DUMMY FIND OUT IF YOUR CHIPPED FIRST" so save it! I only want to hear from the non a-holes who actually arent here to Flame on! Thanks for ur appreciation.

The issue with the tach sounds like it could be that the new cluster has the coding plug for a six cylinder engine in it. The problem with the fuel gauge could be the sensor, the fuel gauge, or that this cluster isn't the right one for this car.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

The secret is in the fact that your gas gauge doesn't work since you changed your cluster. I'm willing to bet that you swapped in an early 325i cluster, which would explain the tach screwup and the gas gauge reading half. The gas gauge in my cabrio does the same thing since I swapped a late-model cluster into my early cabrio. The sending units are different between early and late, but the reserve sensor is the same. That's why the light still works when it should. Put your old cluster in and I'll bet all your issues go away. Also, buy a Mark D chip!

OK OK.... MArk D chip is coming ASAP... i was just hoping i would find one when i opened up my ecu.

and I could put my original cluster on but the only thing that works correctly is the. wait nothing works right :( lol

ill update this when either one comes around. Let me know if anyone has a full working 91 318is cluster... in so-cal

hey chris, you emailed me about my cluster on craigslist. an easy way to tell if you have an early or late cluster is by the color of the back. 87 325i clusters have a white back, and 88 and newer have a blue. you can use the 88 and newer ones in your your 318is, but you have to change the coding plug on the front. if you do have an early one, which it sounds like from the gas gauge, i still have the one on craigslist.
