    m42 tweaks

I was just sitting here wondering what I can do to get a bit more out of my 91 318is. I read the article in the tech section with all those tweaks, and am going to try some of it out. But I was still wondering if anyone had pulled off anything more. As I was lookin around I saw http://www.downingatlanta.com/ and someone said they fit it on their 1992 m42. Would it fit on a 91 ? Can anyone tell me the differences between the two e30 and 336 m42's? Also any other info on anything anyone has done to their 318s to get jsut that extra bit of performance out of it would be greatly appriciated.

    Thanks

Apparently, the JC chip is the best investment you can do for quick performance.

Difference between E36 and E30 M42s mainly is knock sensors. Intake manifold design was different as well.

sadly there isnt much of a m42 aftermarket unless you wanna spend pretty big money. truely a JC chip and intake/exhuast are really all you can do without spend 1000+ for new cam etc... well and ofcourse the flywheel swap is key. But for the most part just enjoy the m42 the way she is.

I've heard that the SC on the M42 for the E30 doesn't fit.

Just chip, and get a lighter flywheel and be happy with you MPG. ;)

Suspension, and a good set of tires (azenis are grippy and cheap) and autocross the shit out of it. you'll be suprised by how well you can do with 'just' 136 hp

the E30 m42 also has a forged crank... Chip it, and get a good cat back ie supersprint, good suspension and driving lessons and you'll be set.

Thats just wrong the M42 in a E30 and E36 are the same no knock sensors, Yes the inlet manifold was slightly different with a direct valve, but the later E36 318is cars were fitted with a M44 which has a knock sensor and which is also 1.9l its worse in design tho, as BMW started to use cheaper parts.

The E36 318is DID have the M42 prior to being replaced by the M44 later in its life (somewhere in 96- 97)
u need to brush up a little on your facts. No offence..
In fact I have the E36 M42 engine in my car, and it ain't running roller arms (which is found in the M44)
u may want to read the Brendan Purcell's website on E30 318is and a little more on the evolution of the M42 engine.

and yes the E36 M42 have knock sensors and different manifold deisgn, apart ffrom that, both the E30 M42 and E36 M42 are basically the same...

Essentially follow Stu's little guide found:http://www.r3vlimited.com/Tech/318is.htm.

It is true, sadly the Downing Atlanta SC wont fit on the E30's. They are just down the street from me and I decided to ask one day.

Other than that you would have to do some custom stuff if you want way more power from your M42. I was pursuing a turbo 318is project but I could no longer afford to insure my E30 and E36 so I sadly had to sell my E30. One day I would love to resume the project as I still have all the parts.

The M42 was one of the funnest engines in the E30 chassis that I had a chance to play with with exception of the S14. I'm a fan of 4 cylinders big time.

I didnt say the E36 didnt carry a M42 i said it was the same engine as the one in a E30. I will say this again the M42 in the E36 had no knock sensors. I have the BMW tech specs here for both engines and the M42 does not have a knock sensor. Next you will be telling me the M42 in a E36 had a MAF sensor too
