    Rod And Main Bearings

here's a question for you guys that know something about the M20 how long do you figure it would take to replace rod and main bearing with the engine still in the car and does the crank have to come out to do this???
car has 370,xxxkm's on it and i don't want to end up with a M20 boat anchor the rest of the motor is tight dosn't burn or leak a drop of oil so it's not time for a rebuild yet..

I've never heard of a shop that will blueprint/balance an engine while its in the car and assembled...

You are going to need to bring them the crank and rods.

Don't bother with mains. If it really bothers you you can pull out the rod shells and replace them with another set that's the same size.

Why do you want to replace the bearings if there is no problem with the engine? Are you looking for problems?
Keep fresh oil in it, and Wait till it needs bearings....

and how do you know when it needs new bearings????? when its knocking and then needs the crank to be reground!! thats a pretty crappy answer imo

You can do the rod bearings without pulling the motor, you'll just need to pull the oil pan. Balancing and Blueprinting isn't necessary, you'll just need to pick up some Plasti-Gage and get the tolerences within spec.

Rod bearing replacement is good preventative maitanence, and as mentioned by Mikeedler, you don't want to wait until a rod bearing has wiped out and scored the crank....at that point you will need to pull the motor apart for a rebuild. ;)

thanks Stu and the other people who know what they were talking about

                now finally

I'm willing to bet money that by the time it needs bearings, the rest of the motor will need a rebuild. If you perform regular maintenance, you will probably get rid of the car before it needs bearings. That is of course if oil changes were done regularly throughout the life of the engine.
I think I know a little about this, I've been working on cars for years, and I'm about to graduate from an automotive technical school, and enter the bmw step program.
If you don't like what i have to say, just ignore me, no need to get upset.

lol, it's your time, you are allowed to waste if if you like.

                      HATEHATEHATEHATEHATEHATE

It sounded like dan was trying to say if it needs bearings, it will probably need other things in addition. so why do you hate? just rebuild that shit.

and funny the kid who wont pull his motor and only wants to change his bearings is the one accusing the tech student of not knowing what they're talking about

I m not going to get upset, just trying to point out you have no idea what u r talking about! School or not, and "working" on cars, and "about" to "start" the bmw step program doesnt mean anything. replacing the bearings will not hurt anything, and it is definately not a bad thing to do. no reason to give rediculious answers when you are not sure of something.

why pull an entire motor if you don't have too..... it just dosn't make logical sense. it's preventative mainteince, if the car was burning oil then the motor would come out and get rebuilt, dad dosn't mind spending money on things that need to be fixed or could cause serious damage if not fixed. as stated several times before theres no way of telling whether it needs rod bearings or not

all i asked was how long to do them roughly not whether or not to do them..
that and i'm still waiting for dan to pull an answer out of his ass on how to tell when rod or main bearings are going
