You just need a sheet of ABS plastic, but it would probably be better to use sheet metal.

sheet metal conducts heat, making it pointless.

I have a spare sheet of it. Its big enough to make an exact copy of what I made for myself.

The seal up top is a spare hood seal cut up.

You can get the rubber strip at autozone. Its just the door weatherstripping stuff. I made my heatshield out of aluminum and heat duct insulation. Seems to work just fine for me.

                Jordan:

You think you'll sell them for the lazy?
That's seriously a good shield you made.

on ebay, eric lukas (etlukas) will sometimes sell his heat shields with no reserve and 1.00 starting bid. it will require some cutting if you have a pre-facelift car, but if not, its pretty much the same concept that jordan used (plastic heatshield with hood seal custom fitted for an e30)
I retired my E30 for now...

                    Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replys, but my main questions is where can i buy the abs plastic? Making is pretty easy if i have a sample to copy. :D Thanks Jordan. O by the way i didn't know if you were offering your spare sheet of plastic, but i figure it might be cheaper for me to just buy a piece here locally then have you ship it down to California. Also for you to have some spare, i'm sure it will come in handle b/c your so crafty. Thanks again guys.

                      Hi Gil
I don't know Davis well enough to direct you directly, but check www.tapplastics.com for the location nearest you. You can also look for plastics in the yellow pages, or go to any car stereo store and ask the install manager (don't even go to the front if you can help it) and see if he has a big enough piece to do your thang. Tap is where I i buy my fiberglass supplies, too

also mcmaster-carr mcmaster.com sells everything under the sun for making pretty much anything. Their selection is stupefyingly huge. Just search for "abs sheet" or some such. If you wanna make it out of carbon fiber, look at Aircraft spruce and specialty (google it).

The puprose of the heatshield is to block the hot air from the rest of the engine getting into the air filter. It doesn't matter if it's plastic or metal, it will work as long as it's sealed on the top.
