ACK! WHY is my fuel brown?????

my 86 eta died on me the other day. Wouldn't rev past 4k at first, gradually worked its way down. It took two weeks and 1.5 tanks of fuel to finally not want to go anything past idle. It idl fine, but you try to give it any throttle and it dies.

So I just took the gas line off of the inline pump. When I did, copious amounts of brown sooty gas cam pouring out of the rubber line. The gas from the pump end was clear. When I cranked the car, same deal- clear gas from pump, sooty brown crap drizzled out of the rubber line. WTF!?!?!?

BTW I picked up a autozone fuel filter, gonna slap that puppy on and report results..

    more info...

I first pulled the line off the pump in front of the driver's side rear wheel. When I did this, clean fuel came out of the pump line, but dark sooty fuel came out of the rubber line to the front of the car. I was amazed, it was really brown. Looked like creek water after a storm. With a bucket in place I cranked the car over a couple times. Clean fuel shot out the pump side, icky fuel leaked from the fuel line side. I have NO idea what this is.

I replaced the fuel filter (PITA!) and for about 10 minutes it ran like a scalded cat, better than it ever has for me. Wow, how fun! But it was short-lived, same symptoms came back and I didn't think I'd make it home. I'm stumped, but I'm gonna wait to take it to a great indy BMW specialist here next thursday.

Sounds like your hard lines are rusted out. I cant think of anything else that would color gasoline brown in the fuel system.

yeah Id guess the tank and/or lines are FUBAR. God knows what this had done to the filter and pumps.
        Im now E30less.

          makes sense....

yeah ok that was another thought but I was denying it to be possbile. Makes perfect sense though. All of a sudden they just decide to let go. Oh well, I hope it's not expensive. I guess I could do it myself.
