    4 point harness in a 4 door...

    i would like to know if anyone has installed this in a e30 if so how????

    I've got 5 pt harness in my E30, but I've got a bolt-in roll bar in it. The main thing you need to ask yourself is, why do I want harnesses in my car??

    The main thing you have to figure out is how to install the shoulder straps (I would NOT recommend the "Y Type" harness you linked to- just get the individual shoulder straps). If you have a roll bar/cage- you simply put them on the horizontal "harness bar" part of that- if no cage or bar, then you have a couple of options- you can install a harness bar by itself- it just goes from one side of the car to the other behind the front seats- this is usually to support the shoulder straps. Or, you could mount the strap to the rear speaker shelf, using large reinforcement plates + eye bolts. You could also mount them to the rear seatbelt holes, but that is the last option, as it's too far below your shoulders to be considered safe in an accident (the straps will actually compress your spine if you get in a wreck!!!).

    The other 3 points are not to bad- Racer Wholesale sells all the hardware you'll need. Just get some of the forged eye bolts + nuts + backing plates, then put the 2 lap belts in the floor of the car and the center "sub" belt in the floor also. If you have stock BMW sport seats, you can run the sub belt up through a small hole in the seat fabric, between the bottom cushion and the thigh support cushion- and it will be hard to see you made a cut.

    Of course, if you are doing this for show, you can install them anyway you want, just don't use them while driving!!

      no im a frequent auto x driver.... and love drifting..... but i want 2 get a harness so i dont fly all over the place..... but yeah thanks for the info any idea just where i can get the bar???

          4 or 5 point harness

          Just my 2 cents, but if you don't have a roll bar or roll cage in the car, DO NOT install a true racing harness set.

          These type of belts are designed to hold you tight against the seat in case of a wreck. They also don't give you anywhere to go if the roof begins to cave in, such as would happen if the car turned over. With a standard 3 point harness, your body can move sideways, thus allowing you to "duck" when the roof comes down. If you are held tight in the seat, then your head can be crushed or severe spinal injuries can occur.

          If you really want to put additional restraints in for autocross, etc., look into the Schroth 4 point system. They don't have a anti-submarine belt, which will allow you to slide downwards. The construction of the belt compensates for the lack of the anti-submarine belt stretching to allow the driver or passenger to get their weight forward of the lap belt so they don't slide under it. They are also the only belt that is DOT legal, and clip into the rear belt latches, making them easy to hook up.

              I'll second this. The Schroth 4 pt e30 setup works well for autox usage, the belts hook into the rear seat belt anchors and don't interfere with keeping the stock 3 points as well.

                  And the Schroth belts are anti submarine, but the main advantage is they are designed to work with a stock seat as well as DOT approved as mentioned above.

                  I run the Rallye 4's in mine and the reason I went with no roll bar is that I am too tall. My head would be right by the B pillar bar and in an accident I could smack my head on the bar. Since my car isn't a track only car, the risk of a roll over on the track (only time i use the belts) is less then an accident on the street. You should also never run a full cage on the street. Shorter people can avoid a roll bar if the B pillar bar is behind the seat but no way can you avoid an A pillar or the upper roof connection bar in an accident. Bar padding will do little to nothing to protect you in a crash, it was meant to cushion the bar when you are wearing a helmet.

                      the grip thingys are basically just plastic posts that go through the harness straps that make it easier to tighten them. I have them along with shoulder pads. Makes them more comfortable as well as easier to tighten down. Not necessary, but nice to have.

                            just an FYI, in rollover situations, 99% of injury comes from your head hitting the A or B pillars. a harness that keeps you in the seat will keep you safer. stock seats bend and flex in ways you can never imagine under accident conditions. The safest place for you to be 99% of the time is strapped into the seat.

                            (the straps will actually compress your spine if you get in a wreck!!!).
                            our E30 seats have been tested to have a certain amount of seat back strength. They can (or could when new) withstand the forces they would need to keep from breaking, which is what leads to spinal compression. in no situation should a harness' angle from your shoulders to the rear mounting locations be more than 45 degrees down from parallel to the ground. past this angle, they don't perform very well.

                            by schroth's contract anyone advertising a price more than 5% less than MSRP ($156.95) will be slapped on the wrist and product held untill they change the advertisement. So unless you go blackmarket or used that's what you'll pay.
