Help please! 84 325e with 86 325es wiring harness question.

I bought an 84 325e with a broken motor (timing belt) with a '86 325es parts car that has a good motor. I was planning on swapping out the wiring harness, idle stabilizer and Motronic control unit with the engine to keep the engine together as best I can. The problem is the '86 has a difference in the wiring harness. In the bently book it is labled as C101 but I can't find out what the wires are for, just what it is called. On the 86 it is round with 11 pins, and on the 84 it is square with 10 pins. If anyone has any information on what the wires are for/if they can be spliced together or what not, that would be GREAT. Worst case scenario I just keep the old wiring harness, kinda a pain to change all the connectors though.

    Thanks much.

Why swap the stuff? you 84 325e engine has the exact same sensors.
As for that connector search for C101 on this site, I've posted the wiring many times to go from the rect to round. Ussualy 318i guys are asking about to drop in a m20.
I'd just stick you're old harness on the new engine with all the new sensors.

I was trying to keep it simple :)

There are a total of maybe 5 connectors that need to be changed by keeping the wiring harness with the engine, and who know's how many if I keep the wiring harness with the car. But thank's anyway. I will probably switch the wiring harness. It would probably be a lot more work to try and get the 86 wiring harness to work with the 84 car. Once again, thanks:)

If you stuck the 86 harness on the 86 engine and into the 84 shell, you'd have to rewire the c101. If you just stick the 84 harness on the 86 engine no wiring needed. a few of the 86 sensors have different plugs but just use your 84 sensors instead.
Everything on the 84 325e engine and the 86 325e engine are interchagable, so just mix and match untill everything works.

thanks again, I will probably be pulling the 86 today, clean it up, clean up the 84 engine compartment, switch the wiring harness and drop it in by the end of wednesday. Also going to change the timing belt, but I am going to do that after the engine is bolted in place. Already put a timing belt on the busted engine...that bolt that requires 300-something pound feet of torque is a real pleasure to deal with
Thank god for the torch

I put the engine in today, changed the wiring harness three days ago. Thanks for the suggestion, it was ultimately easier than I thought it would be, and I only had to change one of the coolant sensors. I haven't had the chance to start the motor up, but by the end of columbus day weekend I should have it running.

So I just wanted to say a final thank you, especially due to the quick response time.
