Snip the belt and remove the compressor, til Spring. I don't know much about A/C, never used it.

A/C work is tricky for the do it yourselfer, you'll need a gauge set to start off with.

Then you must study the refrigeration cycle. Low pressure vapor enters the compressor where it's compressed and turns into a high pressure vapor, then it enters the condenser, where heat is released, this process changes it into a high pressure liquid, next it generally enters a receiver drier where any moisture is absorbed, next it flows through the expansion valve where the high pressure liquid turns into a low pressure liquid, next the evap. absorbs heat from the air entering the cabin and, turns the refrigerant into a low pressure vapor back into the compressor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, this is off the top of my head.

A/C work is best left to the professional if you don't know whats going on.

i think it just needs to be recharged and i was wondering where i could find a cheap adaptor

Most auto part's stores will have it. Check to see if you have R12 fittings or 134a, not sure when they changed over to 134a, or if your's has been converted.

Make sure to charge on the low side, (larger line). Or the can could blow up.

if theres no refrigerent then you have a leak. fix the leak then recharge it.
