How many hours should it take an experienced mechanic to rebuild
The top end of the engine(325i) and the bottom end separately that is.

I’m looking at a car with lots of miles on it and if the engine needs rebuilding I want to use that against the sale price.
    Educate me.

more than the car is realistically worth.
You cant use stuff like that for bargaining. Any intelligent seller will tell you to look elsewhere for a lower mileage car.

I think the book time is something like 11 hours each.

That is about right. To build an engine complete I know a shop that charges 25 hours for a longblock. Not excluding removal and reinstallation of the engine.
