Engine dies in traffic when I shift out of gear

Lately my engine has been stalling when I'm driving in traffic. I'll be coasting in second year for a little bit and then shift into neutral. The engine will die after a second and the rpm gauge goes to 0. Any idea what this could be? It happens randomly. Sometimes the engine will go to 350-500 rpm after shift out into neutral and then it will hop back up to 600.
