pop the steering wheel if you can, under the horn cover is one bigass nut. I think it was 23mm. Then you have to turn the key to release the lock and pop it off.

Then pop the knee bolster by removing 3 plastic screws on the top and one down by the gas pedal in the middle of it. Reach up behind the trim right below the gauges. About 3 inches to each side of the collumn are knurled nuts that you spin off by hand. Pop out that trim by pushing from behind. THen that uncovers the lower screws for the trim around the gauges and look in the cowl and you can see the upper screws.

Remove those and the ones holding the gauges in are apparent.
    Im now E30less.

You don't really have to remove the steering wheel, but it does make getting out the thin rectangular piece above the steering column easier.

remove the panel under the dash

reach under and remove the two nuts that hold the piece below the guages on.

remove the trim piece that goes around the guages

remove the screws that hold the guage cluster in, pull it out as much as you can, disconnect the wires, and then maneuver the cluster out from behind the wheel by moving it to the right side.

i eneded up pulling off my steering wheel.. just because i didnt like the angle the gauges had to come out at... but it turned out the be almost the same... the wheel being gone made it easier to wire up my system though..
