    Bad Mileage from an e30?!?

Ok, so recently I have been getting what appears to be some pretty bad mileage. As far as I am concerned I should be getting around 30 or so mpg. In my case, I'm lucky to get 20...Just the other day I put in about 12.5 gallons and my gas gage reads that I'm about at 1/3 tank and I've not even gone 140 miles yet. WHAT THE HELL IS THE PROBLEM?!?!? :(

I just went and did an I5 run because on Whidbey Island I've only been getting 25mpg. I gassed up in Burlington, went to Bellingham then down to Marysville then topped up in Burlington. I went 115 miles on 3.6 gallons.
When I filled up before the run I went 120miles and used 5.6gals. Maybe an open road run will help.
This is in my '91 318iS. I also just replaced all my leaking hoses, but have yet to clean my airfilter or replace my plugs. Hope this answer is useful for ya.

see I have a 91 318iS too, and ALL my hoses have been replaced, along with a new K&N airfilter and fluids changed...I just don't understand what is going on.

For me I literally have an 7 mile commute, and I reach 50mph for approximately 200yds. By the time I'm about to park is when my motor gets warm.
Even just tooling around, even with a warm motor, the hills and folks who can't maintain a constant speed take a toll on my mileage. I know also my right foot bears some responsibility.

If you do a lot of short trips, thats normal. If you let the engine warm up and it is in otherwise amazing shape, you will see around 28 mpg. I get very close to 40 mpg on the highway as well. How old is your O2 sensor?

Good idea to check all these things:

O2 sensor, they are only good for 50 to 75k. A lazy or dead O2 sensor will kill gas mileage.

Injectors, fuel is better now (especially here in Ca since poly tanks in stations were mandated) but it used to be that cleaning injectors was part of a regular Inspection II service. Dirty injectors that aren't atomizing will piss away a lot of fuel that cant be burned.

Thermostat, good and correct temp (88c for the m42) I have seen m42 cars with an 80c get mileage like you are talking about (and ones with a 75c getting 15 to 17). I don't know why but people are always sticking the wrong thermostat in these things thinking it's a good thing.

As far as the O2 sensor, I'm not sure. I've only owned this car for about 7 months now and the records from the PO don't show him changing the O2 sensor. That def. could be a problem. As far as the injectors and thermostat go, I will surely be checking those out VERY soon to make sure they are in optimal shape. Thanks guys!

How do I test the O2 sensor, just swap it with a new one and see if it fixes it?

Well I am not very good with cars, because i never have one. But my husband said, it seems you need to have engine tune up, to get the right mileage. Good luck
