Bent rack or pinion gear trashed is what I'm trying to determine, this is hard from behind a keyboard.

feel anything in the column, binding in the mast jacket bearings?

If you can't wiggle the wheels with the front end up in the air and the rest of the steering linkage is okay, I'm gonna say the rack. I went and jacked my baby up real quick and I can move the steering easy peasy by just a bit of force on the tires.

        damn...well, we found the problem!

i took the tie rods off. my camber plates are fine, we kinda knew that.
i went straight to separating the u-joint/colum and sure enough the steering colum spun like butter.

the rack is seized up. something is bent inside (probably the pinion). i don't even think its worth any time taking apart to rebuild. Whichone's the mast jacket bearing? I might just take it apart just to learn from it though.

        thanks guys ; /

Like I said, the flat rack gear is prolly bent. The pinion is most likely not your culprit. I have not really heard of bent pinion gears, rack gears, yes. Maybe we were having an issue with terminology when I first described my diagnosis.

Rack being the flat gear, and the pinion being the round gear.

you are probably right, i don't know how these racks fail so i can be way wrong. the rack has a round x-section, made out of the same grade steel as the shock tubes and it just seems much more massive than the pinion. granted it bends, it can definetly seize up the gear.

this is what i had in mind:

i may have time to tear the rack apart after work during the next couple of days. i want to find out. i also want to see how it works.
