CMART - With an LS motor, if you intend to track, you definitely need a "readjustment" in the brake department. ;-)
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

        Yes I do.

I am hoping to DD the car in good weather as well as track use. I won't be competitive at the track so I am leaning towards a good street setup instead of an all out track setup.

The only difference between a street and a track set-up in this case could be the pad compound. And you need to aim at the toughest duty your car will see to determine what brakes you need. That is because if you say that you will doing only two track events per year, then you only need mild brakes then, well, with those mild brakes you might not finish the first session and could very well end up in the guard rails. ;-)

            any thoughts on just pads.
mostly auto-crossing the car, but weekend driving as well.

would love to just go all out... but trying to keep my $$$ smart.

            I have an 87 E30, but with 88 M3 full swap.
thinking Hawk HP Plus, but looking for opinions and links to buy this week.

Hawk HT10. Very streetable track pads.

Front AND rear. Just the front would be a waste of $$$. You car came with rear brakes too. ;-)
