Weld & RE-Drill 4-Lug?

I'm sure it's been thrown out there but I didn't find it in a search.

Can you simply weld and redrill the stock 4-bolt lugs? I'd assume not because all you guys go nuts coming up with contraptions to get into a 5lug setup.

Looking into 15" weaves or Alpina wheels and starting to think that possibly a 5-lug pattern would get me there cheaper, easier, etc...

I take it the offset is wrong? Something else?

In the front, you might be able to get away with welding and redrilling a 5x100, which is vw size

in the rear, you could also do that, but the OD of the hub is 120 mm, which would be ultra scary
