The passenger side of my rearend is rattling like mad whenever I hit any bumps. I just replaced both rear shock mounts, but its still shaking. When taking my local bumpy road fast, the suspension shakes so much that I lose some of my steering control. I looked under that car and did not see any obvious problem (all the bolts look tight). I have no idea of whats causing this. Any ideas would be appreciated.

like Jordan said, "Diff bolts" get a wrench on them i bet you'll get 1/4 to 1/2 a turn on some of them. You can't tell if a bolt is tight just by looking at it. AFAIKComment

I tried tightening them, but their locations are so awkward that I couldn't get all my muscle into it. I'll have to find a torque wrench...Comment

Jack up the rear of the car as high as you SAFELY can, and it it on jack stands. You should be able to give yourself enough room to get under the car comfortably and have enough leverage to get all the bolts.Comment

on the rear half of the car, there are reinforcements for jackstands.... there are 2 allen bolts that come loose often, and i had a similar problem, found out they were loose and tightened them and all is good now....

Make sure your exhuast is securely attached. I drove around my 84 eta a little bit just to see how much I liked it and I found out the entire exhaust isn't secure at all.Comment

We're talking about the bolts that hold the diff in, right? I jacked it way high, but I was simply unable to get the torque I needed due to the awkward loactions of the bolts and the angles needed to spin them. I'm not much of a mechanic (yet) but I'm guessing reaching bolts such as these is a common problem. AHA! I found the problem when probing the trunk. The frame for the battery weight is cracked (my battery is under the hood). The weight is not secure which is causing it to jump. The weight is very heavy.. have any of you taken yours out? If so, do you notice a handling difference?Comment

If you don't have a battery in your trunk, it should be there. However, I've heard its just a cabrio thing. Anyway, its beneath the liner. There is a metal cover with four bolts. Pull the bolts and cover off and underneath you should find a boxy 50-pound weight.Originally posted by Addissimo
For now I removed the weight. This makes the passenger side a bit higher, but its small beans compared to the previous problem. In the near future I'll either fix or create my own mount for the bolts.
I drove the car around a bit sounds and steers MUCH better. I did, however, notice a different rattling noise coming from the front passenger side. It sounds minor though...Comment
