How can I tell exactly what needs replacing?

I've got a 1991 325i convertible whose ride isn't as smooth as it used to be. I could describe the way my car feels while driving, but wouldn't it would be easier for a skilled mechanic to take a test drive?

Also, in the Los Angeles area --- where are some good places to have my suspension evaluated? Will the mechanic always want to drive my car? Or should a skilled mechanic be able to tell just by looking at the whole under-chassis?

In Los Angeles, try American Tire Depot on Hollywood Blvd (between Normandie and Western). Ask for a guy named John (manager). Straight up guy and very knowledgeable. If you describe the symptoms you're unhappy with, they should be able to diagnose the problem and make some recommendations. If they can visibly inspect your suspenson as well, then they'll definetly be able to diagonse and fix the problem. They probably wouldn't also need to test drive the car, but test driving it would only help with diagnosing/fixing the problem.

I'm not recommending American Tire Depots in general. This reommendation is for the one on Hollywood as I have dealt with them several times. John is the manager and the only person over there I've really dealt with. If you go to TireRack.com you can check out more feedback on his shop. All really positive. He's an honest shop owner, which is rare. Especially here in LA. And there prices are the excellent also.
