Rattling noise until brakes are depressed.

Ok, so I have a rattling noise up the front on my 4dr 318i that stops when I put my foot on the brake pedal.

I've had both wheels off and checked to make sure all bolts and nuts are tight. The discs are factory but the pads are aftermarket which don't look as though they need to be changed any time soon either.

It's bloody annoying so what do you guys think this could be??

Do your aftermarket pads have the spring clips on the back of the pad that goes into the caliper piston? Rattling front brakes would make me think that there are none or they are broken. In either case the fix will be correct pads with the spring clips.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I had similar rattling sounds that went away when I depressed the brakes. I was able to isolate the noise to the left rear brake and decided to rebuild front and rear calipers. In addition to the seals, I replaced all of the other parts (e.g., pins, anti-rattle clip (rear), etc.). No more noise.

My calipers were original with over 220K miles on it, so I decided to do a total rebuild, including painting them. If it's not the front pads (broken clip) and you decide to replace the hardware, you might as well do a total rebuild. You will need an air compressor to "pop" the pistons out.

Hmmm, I remember that when I had them out to inspect they didn't have a clip to hold them to the piston at all.

I will most likely purchase new oe pads from BMW.

Thanks guys, and any other comments welcome.

If the inner pad is on a slide then it could be that rattling when there is no pressure from the breaks on it. Cleaning out the slide might fix this or maybe it’s just time for new pads.
