    Subframe or... ?

Well, I'm sure this has been beat to death, but after reading everything search brought up, figured I'd ask as it can be any number of things. Many thanks in advance for any advice, help or input in general.

On both the pass. and drivers side, just behind the doors, there seems to be a rather loud creaking. Happens only on throttle on (Gears 1-3) and lift of the throttle (Gears 1-4). Sound can only be described as, creaking and groaning with a mild bit of sqeeking mixed in. It doesn't last but for a few seconds as throttle is applied or abruptly lifted.

Any ideas? I'm leaning towards rear subframe bushings, but I really, really hope it's something else stupid.

Car is a '91 318is with 179,000 on the clock.

Pass. side is getting much, much louder. Pulling the rear seat tomorrow as the noise outside the car is noticable for 10 feet away or so as the car drives by.

spray the bushings with some appropriate lube and see if that fixes it temporarily

        Define "appropriate lube"?

I W-D40'd 'em lightly and it dramatically reduced the noise for a short time. Then out of no where, got loud again. Now it's next to gone...
