Hit a substantial rock the other night

    91 318iS

Hit a big rock the other night and it took out my oil pan, steering rack and front subframe.

I've got the oil pan and steering rack covered, but have no idea how to replace the front subframe.

Will I need to use an engine hoist to lift up the engine and R&R the subframe?

Once you get in there, it isn't as daunting as it seems.

I'm not daunted as much as I'm unsure what procedure to follow OLD MAN ;)

Yes. Engine mounts directly to the subframe.

The subframe attaches to the car via 2 bolts on either side, should be very obvious once you're down there.

This is from my experience with a 325i, but I can't see there being much, if any, difference.

          1. Remove subframe
          2. Installation is the reverse of step 1.

If in doubt: Get off my lawn

An engine brace is the preferred method of supporting the engine when you remove the subframe. You can use a hoist, but the feet of the hoist are right where you want to work.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
