    Caliper Rebuild

    Hey Guys,

I would like to rebuild my own calipers, mainly because I want to take them apart and have them sandblasted and powedercoated silver.

However, the Bentley nor the internet have any obvious directions on how to take apart and rebuild a caliper.

Does anyone have any pointers on where I should begin and what I should go about doing? I just don't want to ruin these trying to get them apart.

These calipers came off my parts car, so I have a week to get them rebuilt (and hopefully have them taken apart this weekend so I can have a friend powdercoat them) Therefore, it's not like my car is on stands or anything. ;)

    Help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks,

    Sean

OK, well...I got them out just fine.

I got the boots loose, then used the air nozel on our compressor to get the pistons out. Put wood in the caliper so the piston wouldn't destroy something.

Now I see why the front rubber piston boot is such a bitch to get back on! :?

Does anyone have suggestions on how to actually go about REBUILDING them, short of having someone else do it for me?

    Thanks in advance! :D

One hint, sandblast them before tearing them down as you don't want to damage the piston bores. But if you mask them off realy well you should be good to go.

I think there is a writeup at pelicanparts.com... if i remember right its for an e36 but its all the same.

          Good luck.

          Sean-
I used two chop sticks to get the boots back on. You need something that isnt sharp to destroy the boots and using two sticks makes it really easy to get the boot on... as long as a vice is holding the caliper that is.

            I got them together.

            The rears were a cinch.

            The fronts, a different story.

However, I figured out a VERY easy method to do it. It's hard to explain - but basically, I had the boot on the caliper and then I put the boot under the little lip inside the bore. From there, I pushed the caliper in.

I have pics of the process and will make a write up when I have time. Which, is lacking. Hell, I shouldn't even be on here - I have tons of stuff to do before I can graduate.

Sorry, graduating has been my major priority right now. Yes, even over my car. However, time won't be as tight as much, and I will try to get on that.

I have a garage full of parts to empty out too...so, I have only three months to get tons of shit done...daamn. lol

I'll keep you guys posted. :)
