    E30 Handbrake Re-engineering Discussion

    Hey guys,

It's happened for the second time. I dunno if it does to you all, but those little pins that retain my handbrake shoes have ripped through the backing plate.

    (#10/#11 in that diagram)

I'm going to start looking around for a better method of retaining them.

    Possible Solution #1:
Take the spring (#10 in that diagram) and put it onto a bolt and then just attach it with a locking nut through the brake pad and the backing plate. Perhaps with a washer on the back of the backing plate to reinforce it more.

Has anyone else thought of anything more ingenious?

The pins rip through the backing plate when corrosion of the backing plates weakens that area. The fix is to remove the half shafts, pull the hubs, and install new backing plates. Then replace the bearings and reassemble. The ghetto fix is roughly what you describe.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      bingo.

or you can weld a washer to the backers it if you dont have the cash for new ones.

Ahh, I didn't know the backing plate were that reliable. I live in Canada, so even on my summer car, which never sees salt, these pins rip through.

Less ghetto, and more effective I'd say. I just don't want to have to worry about this shit again.

Yeah my JB Weld "repair" failed and so I ended up with new plates/hardware also.

This is a common problem with ALL Bmw's. Back when I worked at the stealership in Ohio, we would see all kinds of rust issues, and this was one of them. I usually would just modify two small washers, to allow them to be the same shape "hole" as the backing plate used to be

On my previous e30 I used cup washers from a toyota corolla. I had to drill the holes a bit larger which also got rid of the rust...
It worked very well for the three years I had that car.

I used washers from a cavalier drum kit, you have to make the wholes a bit bigger but works fine
