spring compressor tool for CAB installation?

anybody got any ideas for DIY tools for the CAB installation? I got the CABs on to the control arms, but need that extra inch towards the front of the car for proper installation.

I tried a socket and hammer but I don't have enough room under the car for a good swing, since it's on jackstands.

I pushed, cursed, and beat my bimmerworld sourced cabs. In the end, sufficient force in the right directions and it isn't too bad. I was expecting it to be a huge waffleswaffleswaffleswaffles when I needed to pull them later, but it went super easy.

edit: my bad, i take it you're using OE style. All you really can do is lube it up and push/hammer it into place- Press if you take em off the car.

I don't always wreck cars, but when I do I wreck them into trees.

have you tried soap/grease on the shaft before install? I did that on our E46 before putting the Meyle HDs on it and they slipped right on. I'm just throwing that out there as a guess because I have yet to have the fun experience on my E30 yet.

I saw a thread where a guy used some threaded rod and a bent piece of metal to pull it on to the control arm, but now I can't find it for the life of me. Will be watching this thread because I'm in the same boat right now, will be doing this as soon as I have some free time.

I used a large tube wood clamp and pickle fork.

check the length of all thread you need for your set up. 12" may be too short. Iused 3'8" a bit beefier.

In the DIY he clearly states to lube with soap and that you can press it on by hand but its easier to use the tool. Like I said.. soap it up and press in on by hand.

ended up just buying the $80 tool since none of the above methods worked, I not only lubed it with soap, but also some silicone grease when the soap wasn't working, also cleaned up the actual mounting point so that it would be smooth.

I have, on E30s and E46 and a couple others. However, a quick caveat: I am a beefy guy and have insane hand strength. In a shop full of guys, I was the only one capable, so YMMV.

Just used this homemade tool for the second time today, first time was a year ago or so. Works great every time and is fairly cheap. Definitely recommended but be sure to use an impact wrench! I used a socket wrench the first time and it took forever.
