    Handbrake missing

So I picked up an e30 a couple months ago. It's a nice 318is with low km's, the guy I bought it from seemed nice enough. The only issues were a leaking steering rack and a faulty handbrake. He tells me the handbrake is "only missing a couple springs", me not knowing anything about cars at the time decide to believe him and go from there.

Yesterday with the help of a friend I pulled the rear wheels/rotors off to check it out, the springs arent the only thing missing, there isnt anything inside the wheel at all, both wheels look like this.

First, what is the bracket around the cable? is that the mounting plate?.

Second, and more importantly, should I look at buying all of these parts new (dealer says ~$320 for all the parts) or should I just look for used parts (no luck so far on kijiji/craigslist/local forums)?

Are these parts something that rust out quickly, and become useless? or are these something that is usually in working order on older cars?

    I'm really looking for suggestions.

Money isn't too much of an issue, the more money spent on these repairs, the less I for the fun stuff (stereo, wheels, coilovers)

Get the pivot spring pins (4 of them) new and the brake shoes new. Everything else I would get from the junkyard.

First thing you asked: It is. The expanding lock that expands the shoes goes right on in there. Here's the diagram of the system.

Second: Brake hardware kit from Blunt. Takes care of all the springs you need for $22.16
Brake shoe set from BMAparts: $20.09
Brake rotor pair from BMAparts (OpParts, has favorable reviews): $29.20
Parking brake cables, If they haven't been used frequently, they rust and seize up, BMAparts: $29.74/pair
Brake pad set from anywhere really. Choose what you want.

I'd hit up blunt for these.
Expanding lock (5) part number: 34411163709
Adjusting Screw (7) part number: 34411100550
      Epanding lock pin (6): 34411100640

The springs rust out over time, most definitely. But the pivot arm and self adjuster typically don't if they're well lubricated and maintained. I like to replace everything new though if I'm doing an overhaul or replacement. In your case it's a complete reinstallation basically. Also, If I were you I would seriously consider taking a wire wheel to those backing plates and repaint them. They look nasty!

Everything should cost you around $200. But that's nearly everything rear brake related. The only thing not changed are the calipers themselves. Don't forget the brake pad wear sensor!
