Alright so this past weekend we were taking out the rear subframe on my 318is to replace the subframe bushings and rear trailing arm bushings, subframe was a biotch to drop down on the drivers side but finally did, passenger side fell off almost immediately. After replacing the bushings we look at the passenger side body mount for the subframe bushing and stuck inside is a bit of the old aluminum core from the old bushing. How am I going to get this out? it appears to have broken flush with the body mount part. Any ideas?

Not sure of it is clear in the picture but that is the under side of the cars body, therefore it can nor be knocked out since it would be hitting the body of the car. how would I get a slide hammer on that it is a smooth inside and there is no lip farther in?sigpicComment

There's probably some sort of lip where the sleeve ends and the body begins. If not I'm sure you can drill a hole into it and thread the slide hammer in.

you could perhaps use a hack saw blade with tape on the end so it doesn't cut your hand and then cut down opposite sides of it by hand. then you end up with two halves, that usually comes loose. its hard and takes ages. but it usually worksComment

You could get the same result much faster with a Sawzall. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. Just don't cut into the car.

It is corroded to the bore, which will require impact to break loose. I would try threading a lag bolt into the aluminum, and pounding it from the top. If this doesn't work, I've drilled a few holes and collapsed the stub left inward. Just don't drill too deep.
I did this once, then I vowed never to allow it to happen again. I use an alternate method to remove the subframe from inside the car. I posted about it before.

quick update
E30Redtop - that is exactly what I did drilled a bunch of holes in the middle of the aluminum grabbed some chisels and pryed the bastards out. upon new subframe bushing install I made sure to put grease to stop or at least slow corrosion from forming. thanks for all the help.sigpicComment
