Clicking from hand brake while driving?

I got the touring back on the road and I have an issue still with the hand brake. It doesn't work. I have to leave it in gear when I shut it off. Bad cause I have a habit of starting the car without the clutch depressed. So today I swapped rims with my other e30 and took it out for a test ride to make sure everything is golden. There's an annoying LOUD clicking. I search in the wheel wells for it but can't find anything rubbing. It sounds like a baseball card in the spokes of a bike tire. Its REAL loud. Well... I had to make it home and I was at the barracks so I drove it on the back roads instead of the autobahn. For some reason I decided to pull the ebrake while driving to see if the noise would go away. Well.... it did. I don't know much about rear brakes.... well... brakes at all for that matter. So what could this be? Adjuster put together backwards?

Yup. Something in the ebrake hardware came apart. Since you're not too familiar with brakes, I'd recommend that you bring the car to a shop. They'll probably sell you a parking brake hardware kit and shoes.

Nah.... I don't do shops. Trust me I'm mechanically inclined and the reason for not know much about them is cause I've never worked on them. I know the basic principles about em and can do most of the work already, but as far as knowing the hand brake system on the e30.... I'm lost. I took my buddies (actually now that I think of it... it was my touring that was his at the time) rear discs off to clean his handbrake and saw all the components and sat and figured out how shit worked. Thats why I'm assuming that the adjuster got put together backwards when my mech did it cause it clicks while rolling forward, but sticks in reverse.....

This exact thing has just happend to me.

I pulled the rotor off last night and found the cause of the noise. One of the tiny springs that holds each shoe to the backing plate had broken. This can cause the shoe to shift position and rub. You can buy a kit from the dealer that includes all new springs and pins. Part # 34 41 9 064 266.

Here's what my shoe looks like.

I think I'm jsut going to replace the springs and not bother with a new shoe. The wear is on the edge and it's just the parking brake so it shouldn't matter.

Hmmm..... I don't know. This is on both sides. We'll see when I pull it apart. I'm skeptical cause its a constant clicking that comes from both sides and gets more rapid as you speed up. Plus my parking brake doesn't work. I'll pull it apart this week sometime.

Max, I had just about the same thing happen when I changed wheels on an old car BITD. My lug bolts were just the tiniest bit too long, and clicked on something. I noticed the ends were shiny...

There's your problem right there. Didn't realize both sides were making noise.

For me it was the lugs being a bit too long. I just ordered some studs and was done with it.
