    Chem-Dip for Whole Caliper

So I have some Girling front calipers I am going to be doing a full rebuild on and want to clean the heck out of the whole caliper inside and out before adding the new seals I purchased.

Is there anything wrong with using Beryman's Chem-Dip on the whole caliper? Diesel in a bucket? Or should I just soak them in Purple Power/Simple Green in a bucket?

I would worry about something too harsh pitting the piston or the piston bore. Seems like that stuff is basically just carb cleaner though, so that should be fine. Maybe it's not a concern at all. I just soaked them in a bucket of simple green for a couple days and brushed them off. I wasn't concerned with being super clean, however. It's tough to get them surgically clean- for that you'd probably want a hot tank or parts washer. Make sure you clean inside the caliper pin bores well- I found a pipe cleaner worked well.

Thanks for the tips. I will roll with the simple green type cleaner and let them soak a while. Seems the safe bet.

And I just went with diesel in a Home Depot bucket cause of how cheap it was. I will leave all the parts in for a couple of days and then attack them with a nylon brush.

Pistons look good and the rest of the hardware is more than serviceable.

Gave me a good scare when the pistons popped free from using compressed air!

Just an update to an old thread. The diesel didn't really do much even after two weeks. So went back to the web and researched alternative methods.

I grabbed a hotplate, ceramic coated pot and mixed in citric acid and water until it was slightly yellowish in color. Turned on the heat and boiled the parts in the solution for about 6 hours. Took them out and let them cool. Then steel wool was all it took to buff off the remaining residue. Worked a treat.

Interesting, basically a kitchen hot tank.

Indeed. You can pick up the stuff from Walmart. Near the canning/jam making stuff. And it is natural.

Here is what the brake calipers looked like after I used the stuff mentioned above. Before they were black as could be and caked on.
