So I have been enduring braking woes for the last several months on my 1988 Super Eta. During braking, the front leg wheel shimmies rather hard, and the pedal is spongy. The system was leaking fluid, so initially I thought it was the master cylinder, and replaced it. After taking the car to a shop for a good bleeding, the brakes felt good.... for about 300 miles. The leak hadn't been corrected, and the master cylinder got air into the system. I couldn't find the leak until yesterday when I had a shop put the car on a rack.
The leak was coming from the bottom of the ABS pump unit located behind the left headlight.
So I searching RealOEM to learn about the ABS pump, I found there are no gasket kits to repair a leaking ABS pump. A BMW replacement pump unit is $2,000+. My question is, if I can locate a working used pump, what has to be done to bleed and calibrate the replacement pump? I assume it is probably best to have a shop with the proper testing equipment. Is this the best way to go? I'm just tired of having gimpy brakes and want to get this problem solved. Any suggestions or advice, folks? I'd appreciate it.
