WTF? wheel wont turn when I tighten spindle nut!

yeah, this car is pissing my off day by day. I replaced one of the front wheel bearings and now as I am putting it back together the spindle nut isnt even tightened down all the way and the hub locks up!

    WTF is going on?

Ok, I managed to get it to work by loosening the nut, wiggling the wheel and tightening a bit at a time while turning the wheel. I eventually got it so the wheel spins freely and was able to tighten the nut the rest of the way.

The only problem I have now is that the wheel wobbles up and down as if the wheel bearing were loose! Did I screw something up? Thanks!

Did the bearing go in totally square? Its possible it could be a little crooked. so when it spins it wobbles.

Either that or you broke loose the inner race and the assembly needs to be removed and checked/re-assembled.

Most front wheel bearing have what are called "lash." Basically, you leave the nut loose enough for the bearings to spin freely and then there is usually some kind of locking device like a cotter key to keep the nut from moving. I haven't pulled a hub apart on an e30, so I don't know if they are like this, but that is how it has been on every other car I've ever seen. My car (MGB) even has shims to take out any extra play.

Kind of blurry, but you can see the castlated nut on the end of the spindle with a cotter key to keep it from coming off.

No, an E30 front hub is a single assembly with the outer race having the hub portion that slides over an inner spindle on the strut housing. If there is play in the bearing, its likely due to the races being separated or an improper install.

well I pulled it all apart to see if everything was lined up and there were a bunch of metal fragments. I guess that means it was NOT aligned and I torqued on it too f'ing hard.

I put my old wheel bearing back on for meanwhile.
