    Front Wheel Bearing Question

I am going to start this off by saying that I know that you buy E30 front wheel bearings in a hub assembly. How ever I was wondering what bearing or bearings are in the hub and are there two bearings or just one? In the Bavarian Autosport website I can just make out the part number in the picture of the hub assembly. It appears to be 201UO9A from SKF, but I am not positive, and of course if there is a second one I cannot see it. If anyone has one lying around and could tell me part number/brand on the bearing/s themselves, and if there are one or two bearings. Any info you can give would be appreciated.

Hub and bearings are replaced as a unit. Took me about a half hour. Get on it!

    Check prices at www.discountimportparts.com

These guys import all their own stuff. Shipping is cheap adn excellent.

I do know they are replaced as a unit. There is nothing currently wrong with my wheel bearings. I am thinking about making new hubs(someone has already pledged free machining services). I have done my research and am aware of Jordans opinions about how if you do anything other than E30M3 front suspension / brakes you are half assing it and stupid to boot. I thought someone might be nice to the dumbass newbie and humor him if they had a hub laying around. I don't really want to buy a stock hub to measure/look at untill I can figure out if I can do it the way I am thinking.

Keep in mind, I have worked as a tech (dealer GM tech, otherwise stereoInstaller) all of my life (I am 42) but yes, it really is easy.

Well, it's not looking encouraging at the moment. SKF appears to mostly make hub assemblies with out a removable bearing. The outer race is actually machined / ground into the hub itself. I guess it must make the part cheaper to make. I don't know for sure that E30 hubs are done this way, but I can't see an outer race in the pictures I have looked at. None of the local parts stores carry the hub in stock, so I can't look at one in any of those. I guess I will have to go to the wrecking yard this week end and have a look.

I have a new skf spare, 2 bearings, it appears outer race is part of the hub, no markings or numbers on the bearings. :(

glad I checked, my shed developed a leak and it was all wet. box for the hub was soaked

Thanks for posting the info. That sucks about your shed, I hope the stuff inside did not get messed up. If the whole thing is a custom design for BMW they may have an oddball size (or tolerance) the on spindle shaft / bearing bore. The equivalent bearing type only seem to come in 5mm increments, so it may not be possible to get a bearing that fits on the spindle.

yea its not like a pressed in bearing into the hub - the hub IS the outer race - its one of those split bearings two where there are TWO inners - so dont get any ideas to remove these and re-install - when they come off they go directly to the can - I just replaced mine 2 weeks ago on the race car but pitched the hubs sorry man

so if i put on new wheel bearings now, but then change my struts i need to do it all over again?

Why do you need to change the strut housing? If you are just installing new cartridges no the wheel hub does not need to be removed - I guess if you are swapping out the entire assembly, and want to have the new bearings you installed previously on your new strut housing assembly then yes you need to do it all over again - but like I said these are pretty much a one time deal - Personally Ive never removed one w/o damaging it, maybe Im just lucky that way
