Ball joints out...need advice please...No one visits "Suspension" forum

Hear a clanking from the front drivers side and when it was lifted noticed that sides ball joint was hanging lower than the other. I assume it is loose and need replacing. I'd like to replace them with perfromance parts to allow better cornering. So I need some sugggestions. What parts to replace while I'm there that I can justify $$ wise, etc. Here's the rub...I can't lower the car as we live on dirt roads in NM and clearance is vital. Also, the crappy roads here are the reason the ball joint went out ( I assume) as the PO had them done right before I bought it a year ago.

    1. Need suggestions as to what type of ball joint set up to use
    2. Parts to replace while I'm in there
    3. Car must remain stock height but corner better than stock
    4. How to "beef it up" so it won't happen again on crappy washboard roads.

    Suggest away...

just replace the control arms (lemforder) and tie rods. Get control arms with new ball joints already installed. If they haven't been replaced since 1987 now is the time. Consider m3 offset CAB or Treehouse CAB's while you're at it.

edit: just noticed you mentioned the PO replaced them. how are your shocks? dont know if that would make much difference but if they're bad -- might be putting undue punishment on ball joints

Treehouse CABs are a waste of money for an otherwise stock car. If you want an upgrade, m3 offset cabs are a good, inexpensive way to go.

Do replace the control arm as a whole. You can't really "beef up" ball joints. Sure you can get custom 4130 pins and cups made, but that is beyond a reasonable scope.

I just bought a pair of outer ball joints from meyle for $28 from fcpeuro.com.
Planning to install soon. But I hear they are made fully out of metal. Compared to the stock which I also read are hollow and have plastic.
The inner joints shouldn't fail unless you drive hard.

        Replace
-control arm bushing if you have the time. Pain in the ass though if you diy.
        -tie rod assembly
        -struts
-sway bar links ($10 for the pair fcpeuro)
