About a year ago my right front caliper mounting bolt let go, and the caliper punched a hole in my rim and severed the brake line and ABS sensor wire. The damage didn't appear to be that bad (other than a mangled rim and tire). So I remounted the caliper and installed a new brake line and sensor. Well, the caliper started dragging and has caused my rotor to warp. I've tried bleeding the brakes and the caliper piston doesn't seem to be the problem as it pushes in rather easily when I loosen the bleed nipple. How would I troubleshoot to find out if its the ABS hydro unit or the master cylinder that is causing the problem? Also can a 040 ABS unit from a '90 be substituted for the 013 in my '87?

If it's just the right front, and not both front, I would presume that it is not the master cylinder; that would cause both front brakes to drag, wouldn't it? I would think that to really test it you would need a brake pressure gauge and a means of getting in to the ABS brain, neither of which the usual DIYer has.
As far as the ABS unit, I would guess that to put the newer one in you would also need the newer ABS control unit, but I don't know for sure. Don't know how they may have changed the electronics.John in MD - 1991 318is
