    real soft brakes...new pads...?

i need to know where to start. the brake pads in my car are new but i still need to push pretty damn hard to get the car to stop. i have gotten used to it so its not like i am about to hit anyone but i would like to fix it. where should i start?

Pedal is hard, but car doesn't stop. Right?
You need to bead in the pads first. And make sure you have the proper grade of compound. Track pads are not too good when it's cold outside.

Also, it does happen that when new pads are installed on worn and scored rotors, as both surfaces don't match, there is not much contact. Therefore braking is difficult.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

Did the pedal effort increase significantly when you replaced the pads? If so your choice of pads may be the cause. If the problem existed before the pad change I'd suspect intake leaks or a failing brake booster.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Have you flushed the brake fluid lately?
